Tomtom must have a large team of viral marketers writing positive reviews here and on other websites. That's the only explanation for its positive average rating. My advice: BELIEVE the bad reviews. Those are the REAL ones. DO NOT BELIEVE the positive reviews. Those are the ones written by Tomtom employees.

Now on to the real issues with ALL Tomtom GPSs:

1. Paid updates
Forget about the "latest map update guarantee". It will not be up-to-date enough to include the latest routes/bridges/etc in your area which ARE ALREADY BUILT AND IN USE. By the time Tomtom includes those in their maps your "guarantee" will be expired and you'll have to PURCHASE the latest version of the map. Have you ever felt RIPPED OFF? Buy a Tomtom GPS and you certainly will.

2. Drifting
Drifting is positioning fluctuation when navigating with your GPS. Let's suppose you're stopped in a red light. Drifting is when your GPS screens starts shifting around like you're on a hot air balloon swinging heavily sideways and/or back and forth. Tomtom GPSs have unbearable drifting.

3. Satellite lock time
Tomtom will tell you its lock on to the satellites and therefore readiness for GPS navigation takes seconds. But wait, that's ONLY IF YOU REMEMBER TO CONNECT YOUR GPS TO THE INTERNET BEFORE USING IT. That's right, in order to get a fast satellite lock time, you have to download a certain "GPS QUICKFIX" file from Tomtom, otherwise it will take up to 15 minutes to lock and be ready to navigate. So much for saving precious time huh? And what about saving time in an emergency situation? If you forgot to connect your unit to the internet and update it, forget it.

4. Street name search
Stupidest algorithm I've ever seen. Just typing a part of the name (let's say the easiest part) won't do the trick, you have to enter the street name EXACTLY in the order it appears or you'll risk not finding it. Charming.

5. Outdated speedcam warnings
That speedcam which has been removed will still be there for a long time. The new speedcams will give you enough tickets to pay for a new GPS over and over.

6. Mounting cup will wear off in no time
The standard mounting kit which comes with the GPS will wear off in a very short time - I don't use mine all that much and yet it woudn't stick to the windshield after less than a year. Just unbelieveble. Of course a replacement, especially one that's a little more efficient than the original (which is disposable) isn't cheap AT ALL.

7. The GPS often wants me to go the wrong way on one way streets, and has absolutely no regard to dangerous areas which should be avoided.

Today I had an emergency that showed the Tomtom dependability (or lack thereof) in vivid colors. I don't ever want to go through the kind of aggravation I'm subject to when using this unit. Great product! works very well.. you type in an address and drive to it. The points of interest are sufficient for my use. After several weeks I did not come across any geographical errors. The blue tooth works very well.
Speech is good, yes it mispronounces Spanish street names, but so do most non Spanish speakers. The pronunciation is still quite understandable, nevertheless.
I did quite a bit of research and chose this unit over garmin because of the user updates, plus all the features that in the garmins would cost a lot more money. I read some of the complaints and I did not notice any problems. I guess people will find fault with anything if they try hard enough. Nevertheless I recommend this product

I received this gps and unpacked it, read the manual, loaded the software.
I spent 6 hours trying to figure out how to get, and load, the free map update. After 6 hours and 4 attempts to update the maps I gave up. Everytime the maps were downloaded, 1hour 30 minutes on a 5 gig connection, it came up with an error message, different one each time, and failed to update the map it told me was 7 quarters out of date.
I then attempted to enter a route to get from my home to my other house. What a frustrating exercise in wasted time.
If you have to much time on your hands you may wish to go outside and drive a few nails through you hand, it will be just as enjoyable and useful as the time you will waste trying to make this thing useful.

I'll skip over all of the details of use and features so thoroughly covered by all of the other reviewers and confine my comments to the points of interest. They are abysmal. Truly awful. The points of interest database must be wildly out of date (I have the latest maps) or extremely limited in scope because you can not rely on Tomtom to get you to much of anything when searching by name. Example: trying to navigate to a Fedex Kinkos store in my area from a direction I don't normally come from the 720 was totally unable to find the store. I would have had to have known the street address ahead of time defeating the purpose of POIs.
I've added many lists of POIs to the Tomtom hoping to improve it but no joy - it is useless to me when trying to navigate by name to a store, bank, etc.
