I ended up returning the device. My main reason to get it was to have the directions play via the FM transmitter to my car radio, my car radio has no inputs otherwise. Apparently this feature gets purposely disabled/removed as soon as you update the device software from TomTom. Some EU regulation on intermittent fm broadcasting.

I have had my 720T for about a month now, and have been happy with it so far. It is replacing a Sony nvu-73t And a worldnav 3100. I like the ability to correct a map error, and share the correction with others. also really like the built in fm transmitter for playing my music while travelling in 'no good radio" areas of the country. This model plays MP3 files but not video files...BUT you can find video player software for this (and other tomtoms) on the internet for $30-45, OR you can save your money and search for the freebie videoplayer TOMPLAYER using search engines. The addition of this freeware videoplayer allows me to leave my Archos videoplayer at home when taking some trips, saving weight. The videoplayer uses the SD cards to store video and audio files on, 2gb max cards.

The 720's voices are clear, the built in antenna works great for me, tomtom home software updates the unit while it is connected to my pc, what's not to like?

Worth looking for as a refurb, good prices to be found.

When I received my 720, I couldn't get voice input to work. Some of the documentation on the web site said it had voice input and some didn't mention it so I got in touch with customer support. They told me it did not have and would never have voice input and I was out of luck. It appears that the early release of software had voice support but it was removed in the US. I think it is available in Europe. They probably want people to buy the new Go730 for a lot more money for the voice imput. I was happy with the product until the battery only lasted several minutes off of the charger. After a tedious ordeal with TomTom customer service, I spent money mailing my TomTom back and then they sent me a refurbished one. Since I've had the 'new' one, it randomly shuts off at what seem like the most inopportune times, like in the middle of a multiple-turn guidance with tons of traffic. I'm now in the process of dealing with their customer service again. It's no pleasure.
If it tells you anything, it's almost May now and they've still got the same message they had in December (when I had the first trouble) stating they apologize for the inconvenience but due to the 'holiday season' they are experiencing 'higher than normal call volume.'

I had an older Mio GPS that I really liked but it had no updates and no bluetooth phone connection so I purchased the new TomTom for both of those features. The main reason I returned it was it did not function hands free with my phone. When I called tech support, their definition of hands free was that you did not have to hold the phone to type/punch everything into the screen. That did not do the trick, I wanted true hands free using voice commands. So at that point the TomTom was history. I replaced it with a new Garmin that the hands free funciton works fine with voice commands from my Motorola Razr. Amazon returns was awesome! Easy to do and painless. The best part of my purchase! The reason I question tech support was that what I wanted seemed so basic to Hands Free - did they just not know how to do that, or was their Hands Free function really that lame?

While I had the phone I noticed a few other things. One was that when plugged into their pc program a item would pop up and tell me my maps were obsolete and I needed to buy new ones. So, given I had the first update free I went to update the maps - but that screen said my maps were up to date. Does that mean the first notification was just a sales thing, not accurate; or does that mean the map update function is wrong?

The software was not Vista "Comfortable" - to make it work correctly I had to use another computer that was Windows XP - not handy for a person with one pc.

Was soooo excited to get my wife an upgrade from her old tomtom 700.
Found great price on Amazon and with the understanding that we get a free firmware upgrade within the first 30 days after purchase that basically turns the 720 into a 730....I was sold.

UNFORTUNATELY....the unit we received from Amazon....the touchscreen was defective! Buttons were highlighting that were not touched...and letters would type all by themselves! sigh!

Decent GPS. Catches signal relatively quickly. Routes and reroutes fast. Now the many problems:

1. The submenus are infinitely deep and when you are done and want to go back to seeing your route, there is no "exit" button!! You have to go back as many times.

2. Something as useful as seeing turn-by-turn direction is hidden in a menu 3 levels down.

3. No way to create shortcuts to your desired menus to alleviate problems 1, 2.

4. Somehow, I see multiple entries for most cities (e.g., Los Angeles, Los Angeles, Los Angeles CA). You try one, and then if you dont find your address there, try the next and so on. Frustrating many times.

5. There is no way to search with street names first instead of town/city. Moreover, tomtom does not search for neighboring towns if it does not find the address in the asked for town name. In California, town names change every 2 miles and most people dont realize the boundaries! The only reliable way to use Tomtom is to know the zipcode.

5. The bluetooth phone connection is unreliable. Few days back it completely washed out the synced up phonebook from the GPS and now wont let it back in. I have never gotten the text message part of it to work.

6. The POIs are old and not checked for correctness. Often I find restaurants listed which shut down years back.

7. The GPS does not show the address where it is taking you and there is no way to get it!! E.g., you follow directions to a shop using the POI search and then park your car somewhere nearby. Now you want the exact address to walk to but to get to it, you have to search for the POI again and make sure *not* to ask Tomtom to route to it. Showing the start and end addresses in the route should have been an obvious add on.

All in all, it seems that the interface was designed by someone who has never really driven in real life conditions! the only thing about this that i would change is the pre-installed POI package, you have to know the name of the POI directly. for example, if i were wanting to search only mexican restaurants, i couldn't; i would have to scroll through every kind of restaurant. i guess i wish it were set up more like a yellow pages or if it could search keywords without that word being in part, the name of the POI. there are ways to customize POI and add more..its just very time consuming.

while driving i play the tomtom through the speakers of my car using the auxiliary channel; i went out and bought a headphone jack splitter since i only have one auxiliary port, so i could listen to both the tomtom and my ipod through the speakers of my car...works great!
