I had been looking for the right GPS for quite a while, balancing whether I wanted the bells and whistles along with a hefty price tag or go for a bare bones unit.
Then the Go 720 crossed my screen. Bluetooth, MP3 player, large screen, the features are impressive with a price tag that the stores would have a hard time to match. Also, sad as it sounds, wanted the Homer Simpson voice as I thought it would break the boredom on an upcoming trip I had planned. Unfortunately, that's where my praise ends.
The first GPS I received refused to sync with my computer and in fact, got corrupted almost straight out the box.
Second unit had no initial problems and synced with the PC fine, downloaded the latest map, signed up on Map Share, added some points of interest and even managed to download the Homer Simpson voice I was after with no problems (cost $13 though).
Thought I would do some trial runs and it seemed to be pretty much on par with what I believed were the quickest routes. Then came the fateful day I put my trust in the TomTom. The route to say the least was bizarre. Even though I had specified no unpaved roads, it took them until eventually the sign read, road closed. Now, going up dark, one car width lanes, Homer's voice kept telling me to turn around, but to where, back home? I was lost and my downloaded celebrity voice was now the most annoying thing on the planet. Eventually, I got to my destination by ignoring it and using a good old fashioned map. TomTom told me to go straight on at an intersection, when I knew I had to go right. Having taken the right, it readjusted to the correct route and shaved 10 minutes off the eta.
As the celebrity voices become very irritating after a while (it would keep using the same punchline over and over again and would not tell you any street names), I resorted back to the computer voice. Then I noticed that it kept stuttering resulting in the voice not working at all. Then I would loose the Bluetooth feature though both issues would restore after continual warm starting.

Got the 720 at a discounted price .. comparable to much lower functional units. That made a great bargain for a device that is both functional and accurate.

My complaints: (1) Does not display altitude/elevation. I just assumed any GPS would have that. (2) Don't like the full-screen "hot touch zone". If you go to pick up the unit (I don't like mounting on dash because of theft), you almost always kick it into a menu mode. Menu hot spot could be an icon on the main display. (3) Have not found a "PAUSE" mode for when you call an audible (rest stop, brief side trip) ... so you keep getting directions to get back on course. My unit had really old maps. Must have been sitting on the shelf for quite some time. Luckily after staying on hold for 30 minutes, I finally got through to Tech Support (located in NY) and was able to get the latest maps for free as my unit (or rather most TomTom units) was guaranteed the most recent maps after e-mailing retail proof of purchase (30 days) + latest map guaranteed form.

Nitpicking: Never seems to direct me to take the freeway located next to my residence even though its the fastest and closest way to my destination... even after selecting "Fastest Route" or "Shortest Route".

Navigation interface is lacking compared to my previously stolen Garmin unit but still functional. Customer service was good and promptly fixed my problem. Unit was on sale with free shipping through Amazon and I took the bait. 2 months of usage and no issues so far. I was happy with my TomTom 720 until it was time to update it. I carefully read ALL the instructions on their web site and followed them to the letter. Now my 720 does not work--I get a flashing red "X" and nothing else. I have reinstalled everything multiple times and followed all the trouble-shooting instructions on their web site. I bought this item after reviewing alot of different TomToms models, I decided to get this tomom the 720 for the Price and all its features. Used the free shipping item came less then a couple days, arrived before delivery date. Once turned on tomtom it turned on in a differnt language, but once connected my laptop, automaticly asked to download software for the tomtom. Once downloaded the actual tomtom ask me to pick the lanauage which I pick English, then took me thru quick steps to setting up the device. But once on the tomtom home on my computer kept stating maps were 6 quaters out of date. Tried to update, but kept stating payment was do, email company with my problem regarding the maps being out of date, also attach a copy of my receipt to the email for proof of purchase. They responded back to me on just how to load the tomtom on my computer. Which was already installed. Call TOMTOM the next day waited on hold for like 20 mins, but spoke to a customer rep who was very nice and polite, pulled up my email that was sent with attachment, since he would need to verify my purchase. Took a couple of mins, but then explained and told me he was going to be emailing me directions on how to back up my tomom just incase there would be any problems, which I did this. He stated once itemed was back up, on the Tomtom home Then would show that a new update was Ready, which it was. Downloaded this to the device, now device is like new again with the latest maps. This is the first time I bought a product from Amazon that I was disappointed with. When I got it I noticed it did not have the latest map version. So I called Tom Tom and they confirmed it...it was actually a few versions old. They (Tom Tom) said if I bought the item recently and I faxed them the receipt that they would send me the latest map version for free. Now as of right now I still do not have the latest version in hand and if I don't get it for some reason I am sending the product back to Amazon and/or requesting the latest map version for free. Now the description did not say "latest" map version, but I would assume if you are buying a new product it should have the latest version of the maps on it. I'm very disappointed...

Otherwise the product, after a few technical tweeks after talking to the Tom Tom tech, works really well...accept of course it doesn't get us to where we're going because of the old maps :) But it has some cool features like bluetooth and it can play your music or reroute you if there's traffic. I would give this a negative star rating if it was offered because of the time and effort trying to get two of these units to work. I bought the Tom Tom 720 through Amazon because it appeared to be a quality unit and at a significantly reduced price. The unit did not work. It would turn on; but would not access the navigation screen. I reset the unit several times and this did not help at all. I returned this defective unit to Amazon for a replacement. Amazon very quickly sent a replacement which worked slightly better...the navigation screen came on and the unit appeared to work. A few hours later I turned the unit on and could not access the navigation screen. I reset the unit several times and it would not work. After 2 tries with Tom Tom and the exact same problem with both units I'm giving up on this brand. This is the first GPS unit i have so i dont consider my self an expert but i have to say that this product everything i needed help with, i like all the features, its very accurate specially on the speed limits, as soon as you entere a speed limit change it displays it right away, its very quick calculating route changes.
After i purchased this unit two of my friends have Garmin GPS's and it seems that the Tom Tom ones aquire satellite signal much faster, i belive this should be a common feature regardless of the model.

I'm not one to make a review. I don't know how to type, I'm Lazy, and this is work that I'm not getting paid for. But in hopes to save others some problems and wasted time. I'll start pecking at these keys...My Wife and I was dissapointed in this unit soo much that I returned it to Amazon. Keep in mind I followed the start up directions to the letter, to include charging it fully..etc..

My wife and I was given a cheap Bare Bone Mio GPS for Christmas in 2006 and it was stolen so we wanted to replace it. We were more than satisfied with this bare bone unit. It was accurate and it took us the short routes that we were familiar with. This was the complete opposite with the tom tom 720 no matter how we configured it, may it be shortest distance route, quickest route,alternate route..etc.. It also said my house was about 20 houses down from where it was. To give the tom tom some credit, Google Earth does the same thing. My Mio GPS was on the nose. Another thing I hated was instead of letting me take a left(to stores,restuarants, etc) facing on comming traffic.. it would take me further down the street so I could make a U Turn(What a hassle and a waste of time, mileage and gas!). There where times it had me driving in open fields with no roads, when in fact I was on a road. My Dec 2006 Mio did not do this. To keep things short since I don't know how to type...Back to Amazon it went and they credited back my card..Good Job Amazon!

another thing I should add, is that it did not let me update my map for free, The free code that I had was one didget short which makes me wonder how old was this unit. This is my very first GPS and I couldn't be happier (except maybe if they had a cool screensaver for the starting up and shutting down features!:) ). I am going to concentrate on the little things in my review since my tomtom go 720 did it's main job (navigation) perfectly. The FM transmitter worked great for me. The sound was clear and loud, and the tomtom automatically paused the music off my SD card whenever giving instructions. The SD card worked from the moment i plugged it in, though you have to remember to place your music in a folder called mp3 or else your tomtom won't know where to look. The computer voice read most street names well, and i had lots of fun letting eric cartman give me the directions!
people often say that garmins are easier to use, but i definitely prefer my tomtom. the menu might be a little more involved, but with so many extra features it needs to be.

Nice unit with good graphics. Like some other people, after downloading the most recent maps all I had on my unit was a map of Guam. However, one phone call to the folks at Tom Tom rectified the problem. As I understand the situation, some units have been on the shelf for a while and don't have software upgrades to recognize the newest maps when downloaded. But it was a quick and painless fix. Also, as some have noted in reviews, only the computer generated voice gives street names while navigating. But that's okay. All in all a good product for the modest cost and certainly worth a look.
