On several trials it has given me wrong turn commands, even after changing
my preferences from fastest to shortest route and from no toll roads to include toll roads. Don't know where I would have gone if I had followed the known errors, but I continued on the shortest AND fastest routes and the 920 eventually agreed with the route I actually drove and gave correct Turn instructions after concidreable wrong information. It may be the old database that came with the refurbished 920, and TomTom refuses to update it to current database without a hefty charge. I bought it in Aug 2007, given the 2 years use I put on it, I have to admit it did work good for the past two years. The software system never break as to entirely collapse (when it hangs up processing, all you have to do is reset it), I would say it's robust to the use I put on it.

There are times when over half a year I just drove locally to places I knew well-- the fact that I put it idle for half a year didn't do much harm at all. I can just use it with charger on and it's good to go.

Now I really have to complain about the outdated map, there are so many times I end up in at end of a road, realizing the GPS map is totally out of sync with the reality. This happened both at urban setting and rural area. I remember driving to Cleveland Museum of Art in Oct of 2008, this little GPS lead me to a creepy area in Cleveland that is far away from Case campus. I was so agonized lost in that place. I could not understand-- the museum is there for about a century, and why the GPS can't even find a place like this??

Other occasions including once driving in Amish country little town, it directed me driving all the way (2 miles) along one major road, then told me turn back at the intersection. It was a joke not cool. I could have used any of the intersection I came across to do the drive back, why so long a expedition???

The website has absolutely no renew/map support for it, which makes the situation all the more hopeless ( my friend jail break his to update, but it doesn't help much... )

When the rating ask for individual ratings for 'ease of use' I have to say it's better than an LG GPS that I drove with, but it's not as good as a Garmin I tested.

For 'features'-- there's nothing fancy about it, it's really basic use. There's no fancy stuff as to multi-language sound support (and honestly I don't need to know the direction in 90 languages). But I find it would be nice if it could be used with google earth ( google earth now support work with Garmin etcetera)-- that will be a major expansion. But again, I could not be so impractical to expect a two year old machine being so much ahead of time.

I got this as a gift. I was borrowing a Garmin 650 or something close but in the 6-series... This TOM TOM doesn't feel cheap like the Garmin. Its well designed and slim, not bulky like the Garmin. The display and graphics is of far better resolution than the Garmin. Even though it doesnt tell you the streets you can see it crystal clear on the display, and yes, it sort of drops you off where your destination is but all you have to do is LOOK and you will see it. Are you looking for a GPS to serve your drinks or something? The voices are also crystal clear. This is a far better unit than GARMIN. To me its the difference between eating at Olive Garden (garmin) and a fine dining establishment (Tom Tom). Olive Garden is all bulk and no refinement. Also Garmin would go many miles out of the way to find a location over 15 minutes away, I have not had this problem with the TomTom. The POI are also more thorough than Garmins. I cant emphasize how nice the graphics are on the Tom Toms. And its loaded with options of all kinds. I have not downloaded any maps but I have not needed to. It works perfect out of the package. It also can be very slow to acquire satellites, so you will probably need to know the general area you are heading to as it may take up to 5 minutes to acquire one. Their tech support leaves much to be desired, as when I broght this to their attention they were more interested in informing me of their repair costs than on discussing the problem, especially on what should have been a warranty issue. Bottom-line: if you get one as a gift, you may want to stick with it. This is the second GPS unit I have ever owned. The first one is a very old Garmin model with a tiny black and white screen. I used that one religiously for probably 5+ years all around the U.S., Canada, and even Hawaii, with no problems whatsoever. Notably, I never once had my Garmin give me wacky routing from point A to point B. When I first plugged in this unit, I was impressed with the nice user interface. I never had to open the user manual for anything. It was a breeze to figure out. However, user interface is not the most important feature of a GPS unit. It is more important that the unit does its job--to get you where you want to go. On my first journey--a 20-mile trek across town--I ran into trouble right away. Mind you, I was not in a new area with new roads. I started in a town that is over 100 years old, and the Magellan GPS had me drive past the road where I knew that I should have turned right, then make a right on the next road, make another right, and then make a left onto the road I already crossed. There would have been no problem just making the right turn on the correct street, but the Magellan took me on the "scenic route" through a residential neighborhood. I was so intrigued by where it was routing me that I followed like an idiot, even though I knew I had missed my turn. Let's just say that you wouldn't want this to happen in a bad part of town, where the scenic route could mean driving down a dark alley or side street when you could be on a main road. I have used this unit maybe 4-5 times since that first experience, and it has worked fine. However, first impressions are lasting, and it will take me a while to put that experience behind me and believe in this unit. Again, my Garmin was a trusted co-pilot for many years. I even named her--Carmen my Garmin. Then, I kicked her to the curb when a better looking co-pilot came along.
