Had one of these for over a year, recently "updated" and after the update the screen calibration was off center. Tomtom service is the pits! They said there was nothing they could do.
Bought a replacement, worked fine for a few weeks, then after connecting to Tomtom Home, it recommended the update. After this, the speech was "stuttering" and would flip back to the menu right in the middle of manuevers.
Amazon were excellent, refunded promptly , and as I still liked the unit, re-ordered. This new one is working fine, and I will not update the software until I read that Tomtom have fixed the problems.

Okay I have had the Tom Tom 720 for two days now, so I will say up front that I am still in the process of checking it out and learning to use all the GREAT features this GPS has to offer. First I will start with the great compact design of the unit itself...very sleek. Some of the features that I have tried thus far includes adding music and pictures to the unit (i was even able to use the bluetooth feature to transfer music and pictures from my cell phone to the unit) and using the FM transmitter to play through my car speakers...which is great...the music is automatically muted when the system needs to give you the next direction, and so far it plays very clear eliminating static or other interference...the bluetooth is amazing also..I connected it to my sprint phone and it worked without complicatiion. It both easy to set up and use. Your calls actually come through the unit and enables you to answer the call from there or your phone itself...on the unit the callers information name etc..is displayed as it would be on your phone itself. It has also been pretty easy to download other features via Tom Tom home when connected to your computer.. some of these features include screen savers..additional, voices the unit can use to speak in etc. Now lets get to the GPS.. the system receives a strong signal. At first it was kind of tricky putting in an address, but once I realized the correct format it was no problem at all. You just have to remember that the address is not input the way it appears on documents such as your mail...the structure is a litte different, it is in reverse so to speak. So far the system as guided me without flaw. This seemed to work when I first got it, then I did the updates and then it didn't work any more. I kept getting a blinking red X and the unit was unusable. It was evening, so calling support was out. I found a tip on the internet about forcing the unit to reinstall:
1. Save everything (just in case). My TomTom backup wasn't working at the time, so I just looked at the drive via my computer (like any external drive), and copied the entire contents into a new folder.
2. Delete all the top-level files (don't delete any folders). You don't have to delete, the .bmp files, which are just images (and I didn't get them all back).
3. Disconnect your device via TomTom HOME or by putting it away.
4. Restart it and reconnect it.
5. TomTom home will tell you you need updates; do them; restart as it tells you to.
6. This put me in Guam, where I was stuck. Then you go into the preferences and change maps back to North America.

Sorting through all that took many hours of my time, so I hope it helps you!

That was a major major frustration... my other frustration so far is that I was going to Montreal and the address had been given to me in English, "University Street". TomTom does not know that name... it knows only "Rue University". Maybe this is to be expected? I find it annoying.

After first trip report: Very happy with the unit. I should probably mention that I'm a first-time GPS user... I was very happy to have this to help me navigate to an unfamiliar city.

The things I don't like are accessory related. I'm glad that I got the TomTom case to safely store this when I remove it from the car. The mounting and the USB port could both be improved. I chose a dashboard mount so that the unit is closer to me, but alas, this does not work well with the USB port... the USB jack sticks out too much from the bottom of the unit. I can't fully adjust the angle, and am forced to leave it slightly upward facing, which means that on a sunny day, it's all glare. This product works great. I am new to the Houston, Texas area so I bought this to help me get around this huge city. It works great. It is easy to set up and use. It has lots of features, many that I haven't had the time to try yet, such as a built in mp3 player and fm transmitter so you can hear directions from your car's stereo system. The really nice thing I like about this product is if you know a short-cut to where you are going, the device automatically recalculates the route, instead of constantly demanding you to turn around. In every case, it picked up on my short-cut! The map updates are free as well, and the unit will notify you automatically when there is a new version available.

I selected the free shipping and it took almost three weeks to arrive. I was hoping to have the device for a trip to Dallas, but it took so long to arrive, I had to take my trip without it. If you order this product, go ahead and pay for shipping if you want it in less than three weeks. The estimate on the website said 9 business days, but this wasn't the case with my order. This GPS has most of the best features available for the price of the more mediocre systems. I couldn't be more impressed. The directions are very precise, even in very rural areas. We used it in the mountains and even when on unknown forestry roads it kept track of our location and the distance and direction back to the mapped roads. Online we are able to download really fun and practical applications to use with this product. My Motorola W385, which isn't listed as a supported bluetooth phone, has been working fine (except for one exception: one day, it wouldn't stay connected for very long!). However, it can be tough to understand the caller's voice if you're on the highway. I haven't tried porting the voice through the FM or through the line-out tape converter yet, though. I got this as a present so I have no idea as to how competitive the price is here (compared to those in big box stores), but I have to say I'm pretty infatuated with my TomTom. I just used it on my first major trip and it was like having a general in the car alongside me. I had to reroute a couple of times which it did with ease and it sure beats me having to look at paper computer print-out directions as I did in year's past. Had this for about 3 weeks and like it pretty well so far. Saw a reviewer talking about not being able to get the latest map for this unit, and all I can say is he just must not have gone thru proper channels. Mine was delivered with a map that was "6 quarters old" and when I connected to HOME, it showed that I needed to BUY the latest map. I contacted Customer Support via E-Mail and explained the situation and they responded back within a couple of hours that if I'd send them some additional info such as proof of purchase (I created a PDF from the AMAZON conformation and sent it), current map version, etc. that they would take care of it. Within 15 minutes of submitting the requested info, I received an E-Mail telling me to connect to HOME and download the latest map - which I did. We used it last week for a trip around Kentucky. It stopped speaking once, but not sure if that was because I was running it off the battery at the time possibly, Also, one or two POI's were "close" but not exactly where it said they would be (but that was using the OLD Maps which I didn't update until after the trip). I had a 3 year old Magellan that this replaced and this unit is WAY faster at picking up satellites - almost instantaneous - even inside a parking garage! Screen position update on the map seems to lag a little (compared with the old Magellan) when using the 3D view, so next trip I'm switching to the 2D to see if it's any quicker. Used the Map Update feature to tag one POI that was shown on the wrong side of the interstate and that worked pretty well. Also like the optional startup screens, voices, etc. hat you can download to it. Purchased the 3 item package from Amazon. Immediately found out the Bracketron UFM-100BL Nav-Mat GPS Friction Dash Pad does not work with the TomTom 720 Go. Amazon provided a return label. Then found out my 720 Go was programed in a foreign language and later that it had a map of Guam. Not sure why it came programmed with a US map and a Guam map. I did not understand the programmed language but followed the ICONs until I found the Flags. Then programmed the 720 to US English. After a reset to get the 720 to work with my Laptop it reverted back to the original programmed foreign language. Back to the Flag ICON again. Not sure what this is about. Could be a refurbished or just manufactured in the country of the programmed language. After these initial set backs it seems to be working OK for the moment. The GO 720 is a great GPS unit and as other reviewers have mentioned it is essentially the same unit as the GO 730 after you connect it your PC and update it with the included TomTom Home software. I also had to contact TomTom support to request an updated map and found it to be a pleasant support experience. I sent an online request with a copy of my receipt and after a couple of hours TomTom support sent me a response with a free copy of the most recent map.

As far as user interface and routing go, TomTom and Garmin are generally regarded as the best by most GPS review sites. It seems to be a personal preference. There will inevitably be a route that one will prove better than the other, so you will have to live with that.

The GO 720 also has the option to add an external antenna and install the unit in the dashboard console if you like. Most GPS units in this price range do not have this option.
